Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Konitsa, of which it is the seat and a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 735.213 km2. Konitsa is situated in the northern part of the Ioannina regional unit, close to the border with Albania. It is built on the slopes of Mount Smolikas, the highest mountain in Greece. The Aoos River flows through the town.
